Professional Mentorship.

Professional mentoring is a relationship with another health professional, where the mentor provides leadership, guidance, support, clear advice, and direction to a mentee, encouraging them along the way to be the best they can be, and to strive and achieve their goals.

Nau mai haere mai thanks for jumping onto the SuperVisioNZ website.

Alongside my clinical work as a Nurse Practitioner, (NP) my special interest lies in supporting and

growing the nursing workforce across the motu, in particular but not limited to NPs.

Becoming an NP is both a professional and personal journey that takes tenacity and courage. It is a journey that is different for everyone. For many it is involves juggling family, work and the study

requirements. For some it means huge sacrifice and financial burden where putting other life goals on hold is common. Everyone’s journey will be different, and that’s where 1:1 mentorship proves to be really beneficial. I’d love to make a difference in your journey.

As a mentor I aim to walk alongside you in a collegial respectful manner, with an emphasis on

supporting you to grow your confidence and professional expertise regardless of your area of

practice. Wellbeing is at the centre of my philosophy with an emphasis on self-care to promoting

longevity and sustainability of your roles, and the prevention of burnout.

I have the philosophy that no question is a silly question.

Some of the queries my clients bring to sessions include may sound familiar to many of you: Eg:

  • “I’m stuck in my job, I’ve lost all enjoyment and my boss suggested I engage with professional

supervision. Can you please help me get back on track?”

  • “I’m frustrated at work, not sure where my career is going, wondered if some mentorship

might help?”

  • “I want to be a Nurse Practitioner, but am unsure how to go about it.”

  • “I’m feeling like an imposter in my job as a new NP. How do I deal with this?”

  • “I’m so anxious about my panel interview, what should I expect.”

  • “I seem to be struggling with my workload and my patience with my colleagues, patients and

family seems to have gone. I can’t concentrate and am losing sleep worrying about work. Am

I burning out?”

Like professional supervision, mentorship enables a safe confidential space to explore your

professional self, in a reflective way that safely promotes professional growth. There is mutual respect within the relationship and I have a strong commitment to your best interests. I love seeing my clients learn and grow within a framework that supports lifelong learning and curiosity, while responding to your professional needs.

So, what does this look like in practice?

I offer 1:1 virtual professional mentorship sessions that are confidential. Together we can achieve a

number of things, but the focus is always on what you need professionally, to succeed and achieve

your goals. Some examples of what I offer includes but is not limited to:

  • NP Candidate Portfolio advice.

  • Preparation for NP panel assessments.

  • Assistance with career advancement.

  • Professional Supervision.

  • Reflection on practice.

  • Career goal setting.

Like any process, there are phases of the mentorship

1. Rapport Building: Taking time to get to know each other and the development of trust over

time.

2. Direction Setting: What is the purpose of the mentor -mentee relationship? What does the

mentor have to offer the mentee and does this align with the professional values and direction

of the mentee?

3. Progress Making: The core of the relationship is centred around learning.

4. Winding up: This occurs when there is recognition that the relationship has achieved what it

intended to, and there is a need to bring this relationship to an end.

(Clutterbuck, 2023,p 67).

As a current NP I am able to draw on my experience to guide and support my clients. I provide a two-fold service with professional supervision and mentorship as there are subtle differences, but both are beneficial to professional growth and development.

Whether you want one session, or ongoing monthly or bi-monthly sessions, with no pressure, I would love to meet you and help you on your journey.
