Reflecting on a stay in hospital for a total hip replacement recently, highlighted some great reminders re the importance of valuing nursing.

Nurses were involved in every step of my journey. From the time I stepped inside the hospital it was evident the breadth of nursing expertise utilised in order to deliver excellent patient care… to the time i was wheeled out to the car on discharge.

⭐️pre- operatively.

⭐️intra operatively in-theatre.

⭐️post op recovery .

⭐️immediate post op on the ward.

⭐️assistance with mobilising

⭐️discharge planning

⭐️education

⭐️encouragement to walk on a new joint.

Another thing that really struck me was these nurses were happy in their roles.

They love their jobs andd for all the right reasons❤️

It was really noticeable and

I was interested to know why.

Naturally -

Nurses + NP inpatients chat between obs/meds rounds - nurses are always keen to share stories , thats the collegial nature of the role. And so we did.

They put this down to work culture and leadership, respect for each other and what that looked like, better pay, support, wide variation in skills required and the support to learn and grow was highly valued , experiential learning - a surgical ward with a broad variety of surgery. Regular education and collaboration, feeling part of a team regardless of whether dr or nurse, cleaner or kitchen habs, physio or OT, clinical or manager.

One thing that stood out the most was these nurses felt they were making a difference to patients, while simultaneously being supported to do so.

The value of nursing regardless of role within the profession is so pivotal going forward. Nursing is adaptable, roles are expandable but at the same time indispensable.

We need to look after our nurses ❤️ and recognise the value they bring to patient care.

We need to stop burning them out.

We need to start paying them their worth.

We need to expand our nursing workforce for the future , and not clip their wings.

Encourage them to stay, and give them reason to stay.

Thank you for the reminders of why i have lived and loved my nursing career
