Autumn 2026

2026 has been many things, amongst all, rapid!
Hard to believe that we are ¾ of the way through another year. I have been very remiss with my newsletters this year, for many reasons. SuperVisioNZ has been very busy, continuing to provide professional supervision and mentorship to health professionals.
A mid year extended holiday came at the right time, and I am very grateful to all my clients who were patient enough when waiting to pick up their sessions again on my return.
This year, demand has been greater, with most of my clients being Nurse Practitioner (NP) candidates in the Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme (NPTSS) or advanced nurses who are repairing themselves for the NPTSS year.
Although I provide supervision across the health professional spectrum, being a Nurse Practitioner with, now 10 years experience, it makes sense to focus on supporting our future workforce, as the NP workforce continues to expand rapidly. There is nothing nicer than watching your clients start the year with uncertainty, (which can be normal), but then blossom into confident novice NPs ready to tackle the next stage of the journey. I also work with a number of experienced NPs who continue to grow and enjoy what they are doing, and appreciate the regular support along the way.
There have been a number of themes which have shone through this year. Here are some things to think about.
Preparedness: are you prepared for both the expected and unexpected? The health service is in a state of flux constantly at present. This in turn means that we have an opportunity to highlight the invaluable asset that NPs are to all areas of health care. It is important to to recognise that as Nurse Practitioners - we should prepare for the future, and always have a plan B ourselves.
Resilience: When things are in a state of flux, our resilience can be challenged. What does it take to fill your bucket personally and professionally? Professional supervision can help you keep that balance between just enough stress to motivate you, but not enough to cause
distress or burnout. The landscape can be overwhelming. If we, ourselves are not OK, then
we cannot serve our patients, ourselves or our families well.
Tenacity: Nurses are fabulous at being tenacious, and it can be a strength. Are you feeling
tenacious or is your patience challenged? What can you do to make your stickability a
strength while remaining patient as your career /role grows? Small goals, ticked off as you
go, both help you stay on track and deal with things in order of priority or importance.
Self Belief: I often ask NP candidates at the beginning of the year if they believe they can
be an NP. It is really interesting the responses I get, especially when I ask them again at the
end of the year. Often there is a shift in self belief during the year. This can sometimes
fluctuate once you have qualified also. Its important to remember to be patient with yourself
and believe in what you have achieved and what the future may hold.
What level of self belief do you have? Is it waning and do you need to refocus on your self
belief in order to do your job well ? Professional supervision can help.
Winter is coming to an end (hopefully) and as we see the Summer months approaching, it is
a time to reflect on 2026. Have you met your professional or personal goals for the year? Are
you wanting to set some goals for 2027? I would love to help.
SuperVisioNZ is entering its 4th year in 2027 and I am looking forward to welcoming a new
cohort of NP Candidates, those who are budding NPs and any nurses or health
professionals who want to feel more supported along your journey, regardless of challenges.
2027 will bring a fresh website look -so lots to look forward to. Keep an eye out and please
make contact through my contact page -no question is a silly question and I look forward to
walking your journey with you.
