Kate Stark

Mentor & Professional Development Coach providing Supervision for the New Zealand Healthcare Industry

Hi – I’m Kate Stark

Welcome to SuperVisioNZ, I’m glad you’re here!

As a nursing specialist with more than 35years industry experience, I am here to provide health practitioners of New Zealand with professional supervision and mentorship through one-on-one consultations, in person or remotely through online platforms.

My coaching style is professional, unbiased, independent, and most importantly confidential. Together, we can problem solve any issue that is causing you concern, identify areas for development, plan for career growth, and help you to develop a healthy balance between your work and home life so you can perform at your best.

WHAT IS SUPERVISION?

Supervision is a regular, ongoing relational practice that provides practitioners with protected time and a safe space for reflection: harnessing what goes well; unpacking challenges; developing professional goals; and recognising connections and strategies to resource and sustain self-care and care ethics. Fundamental to supervision is recognition that safe practice begins with self-awareness. Culturally safe supervision in Aotearoa includes the capacity to work in partnership with Māori, with awareness of te Tiriti o Waitangi, Māori health, (in)equities, and social justice.

CHOICE OF SUPERVISOR

It’s preferable that the supervisee chooses their supervisor, rather than being allocated someone through their workplace. A good match is when the supervisor has interest and experience in your area of work and can support you towards your goals in the coming year.

DOES SUPERVISION WORK?

There is increasing research about the benefits of supervision in health professionals’ practice. Findings include that supervision increases a sense of support and wellbeing, enables reflection on knowledge and practice, boosts morale and decreases absenteeism. Supervision works best when both the supervisor and the supervisee are willing to be curious and questioning about practice. This process unsettles taken-for-granted ideas of ‘this is the way we do things here’ and means we get outside of our comfort zone, with supportive companionship. Supervision isn’t the right fit or ‘fix’ for someone who for whatever reason is unable to be reflective in their work.

What my clients are saying...

"After taking a break from supervision for the past few years I felt it was time to get back to this important act of self care.

I’m a nurse practitioner, like Kate, so I was immediately drawn to her for supervision. Having supervision from another NP has meant she understands my model of care and the day to day challenges I face in my practice. Kate has allowed me to safely explore parts of my practice in a reflective and meaningful way. Our sessions leave me feeling more connected to my purpose and with a clarity of my values and how they apply to my practice. Thank you Kate."
